Of course it’s not literally what the Book says, but even so many have taken it to mean that. It’s folly anyway, no matter how you look at it. Temptations or burdens, same thing if you ask me.
What conclusions are we to draw from this idea that, though our god(s) will somehow spare us from bearing too heavy a personal load, so many of us seem to have such loads anyway. Even more, those with such loads often proclaim how there must be a sense of divine purpose for it.
You know what I think? I think it’s a load of shit. If you survive a heavy load, good for you, but know this: history is written by the people who didn’t commit suicide out of utter desperation for their own plight, or the ones who aren’t otherwise fucking insane from the stress of it all.
The most likely conclusions I can draw from seeing so many people crushed by their burdens are that 1) either there is no god or 2) he/she/it doesn’t give a fuck about those people you. Unless there’s something massively therapeutic about praying to a being that, at best isn’t even there, or at worst is completely uncaring, why do it?
